Question about English (US)
Hello... I have a question that can somebody tell what one should do if we're in situations which aren't as described or as common in movies or shows or stories in real life that we have no idea about "how to describe them"... What should one do and how to find the most natural way of saying that thing in the language we're trying to learn?

I encounter less than perfect English often. I get a variety of facial expressions or ambiguous answers when someone doesn't understand me. I would love to hear "Sorry, I didn't understand." If you don't understand, be honest and tell them. It both helps with communication and is an opportunity to learn something you didn't know. 😉

@Juneheavens Yes, although I just had this discussion with a student of mine.
I speak US English. My listening skills for most other English accents is fluent. I can't sound like them and would sound strange using their vernacular. The student was choosing what they found easiest from all accents and building their speaking skills from that perspective. They would sound very strange. It's very useful to learn to understand other accents, but your speech practice should be focused on a single accent. That's typically US or UK and then a specific accent within that category.

@Blink01 I couldn't agree more... I feel like I should probably focus on one single accent and build my English skills around it. That's gonna go right under my belt! Thanks again! 🙏🙏😊

@Juneheavens No worries 😉. The subtle differences often come down to muscle training. If your focus is US English, then flap T, stop T, reduced vowel etc are important. From a muscle movement point of view, they are very different than those used in another accent. You want to know when to use those sounds and do it without thought. If those are in competition with other sounds/movements, you're going have a much harder time.
