Ok so what I feel is that different systems are called by different names. (Australia doesn't have any form of underground railway so I'm not sure if that's why I see it that way or if it's universal)
So I think perhaps the most generic term would be "Underground railway"
Subway is used for a number of systems. However I mostly associate this word with America.
"The London Underground" or "The tube" is a specific(!!) name, for the London underground railway.
I think in general foreign countries like to use American terms so often their names are translated in English as "subway"
Another term I've come across is "metro". The Wikipedia article talked about underground railway systems as "metro systems", and Google's definition of metro associates it with the Paris metro

Subway is American English. Tube is British English. Both of them mean 지하철.

@Chris1106 I think "Tube" is specifically the London subway (British person please correct me).
