Instead of writing “ I stayed in NY, where I met Bob”, is it ok to say “ I stayed in NY, meeting Bob there.”?

I think “I stayed in NY, where I met Bob” sounds more correct.
In the second sentence, there are words that indicate past (“stayed”)and present (“meeting”) tense.
Changing the tense in one sentence can sound strange or complicated.
