when people describe their pet's death indirectly, which expression do they use?
e.g.
"I cried my eyes out when my puppy ......"
I can find "bite the dust/pass away/depart this life/kick the bucket" on google, but I'm not sure those are actually how people really say it.

I would say exactly what you said… Something like, “I cried my eyes out when my pet died.” Phrases like “kick the bucket” and “bite the dust” are going to be considered insensitive. “I’m very sad, because my dog passed away” works really well too.
