Opt in/opt out are both phrases that deal with giving/withdrawing consent or agreement to something
For example:
When you sign up with your email on a website, there may be a couple of checkboxes asking “do you want to receive emails from us?”
You may choose to opt in (check the box) or opt out (not check the box)
Here’s some more examples:
A: “Ugh. Why do I keep getting these spam emails?”
B: “Have you unsubscribed from them? You may have accidentally opted to get those emails.”
“The school offered transportation, but I opted out since I have a car.”
Also, I took a screenshot of the phrase “opt out/opted in” in practical use.
In college, I’ve rented a textbook to use for a limited time. I had until August 31 to “opt out” or choose not to rent the book. After that date, I could not back out. Now, it says that I’ve “opted in” because I wanted to keep renting the book until the semester is over.
