Question about Polish

When using dative (cełownik), how can I know which masculine nouns take -owi and which take -u? E.g.:

-Ten kot przygląda mojemu kotu.
-Ten chłopak przygląda mojemu kuzynowi.

Both kot and kuzyn are masculine, animate nouns, but have taken a different suffix in the dative. What is the pattern to follow to know when to use which?
