What does "Exchanging beautiful thoughts won't get us anywhere"
"That hardly matters to me since I am not trying to get anywhere!."
"I think you are trying on all eight cylinders"
"Oh?"
"But somebody put sugar in the gasoline. " mean?
What does "Exchanging beautiful thoughts won't get us anywhere"

I do not understand what the last three sentences means.

They’re metaphors. “Trying on all eight cylinders” just means trying your hardest. Imagine a V8 engine, using all 8 of it’s cylinders to get where it’s going.
Next, “putting sugar in the gasoline” is playing off of the previous car related metaphor. Pouring sugar into the gas tank of a car will destroy the engine.
All in all, I think this is basically just saying “I think you’re giving it all you’ve got, but someone is trying to stop you”.
