1. In general, “ban” refers to a particular object, and “forbid” refers to an action.
For example. “My school banned fidget spinners.” Vs. “My school forbids the use of fidget spinners.”
2. If you’re talking about something set in law - by the government - then you should use ‘ban.’
E.g. The government has banned indoor socialising for people from different households.
