Question about English (US)

Do native English(or English native) speakers really care about order of adjectives in the sentence?
For example:
I signed my son up for a _______________ after school.
1. new wonderful sports program
2. wonderful new sports program

Grammar textbooks would say the second variant is correct, but does it really matter in speech? Or will anybody correct you if you write the first variant?

One more example:
It's a _______________.
1. round, purple, small fruit
2. small, round, purple fruit

The second one is correct, isn't it? There are no such rules in my native language, so is it necessary to learn these rules of correct order of adjectives?
