the first one implies that the action started in the past but is still continuing as in you still go to this place. But the second one just means that it happened in the past, there's no clear implication as to whether this continues in the present or not.
Examples:
I have been going to school for about six months now.
I went there for a while but didn't stay for long.

I have been going there for... is used when the action has taken place and is still being done in the present
example: I have been going to Harvard University for 3 years.
I went there for... is used when the action is done and is in the past.
example: Last year, I went to New York for 2 weeks to visit my mom.
