Carnations are a kind of flower native to Europe, usually red or pink. Cloves are a spice made from the buds of a flowering tree native to Indonesia.

If you say "clove" you mean the dried flower-bud (beginning of a flower, before it blooms) of the clove plant, which has a strong scent similar to allspice or nutmeg.
If you say "carnation" you usually mean the blooming flower of the carnation (not related to clove, even though it has a similar name), which smells very flowery. It has an "undertone" of clove scent, but it smells more like a flower than anything.
