‘Was’ in this sentence is a helping/auxiliary verb. Because wondering is an -ing verb, it’s kind of describing me or ‘I’, so we have to use ‘I was’ (or ‘I am’ in the present tense) to complete the verb. The whole verb is ‘was wondering’ and ‘just’ is an adverb that splits up the two parts and makes the whole thing confusing
