“Took to” can mean to go or to escape somewhere. For example: “The bandits took to the hills”.
That basically means they went to the sky (in other words, space).

@liamuffinpie So I can say “She took her son to the zoo”, which means they went to the zoo?

@Keqing in that case, “took” just has its normal meaning of “moving someone/something (the son) from one place to another”. Like “he took his keys” or “she forgot to take her hat”.
“Took to ___” is a phrase in and of itself (it’s called a phrasal verb) so you don’t put any nouns in the middle of it.
“She and her son took to the zoo” or “the family took to the zoo” would be an example of the way the article is using it, but these aren’t that common. The phrase is most often used when traveling somewhere, like “they took to the news station” or “I will take to the school!”. The most well-known sentence using this verb is “take to the sky”, which can mean “fly”.
There are other meanings for “took to ___” as well, and I find this website which explains it much better than I probably can. The 3rd one is the one I’m talking about. Apparently it’s an informal way of saying it, which I didn’t know before (you learn something new everyday)! https://www.woodwardenglish.com/lesson/take-to-...
I don’t know if this makes sense, but I hope it cleared at least a few things up! The phrase isn’t used very often though, so it shouldn’t be too big of an issue if you don’t know what it means :)
