"But" would use a comma to split two sentences, while "however" would use a semicolon or full stop to split the same sentence. when you use "but" contradict the previous statement but, "however" is a part of the previous statement.

Easiest way: if you are starting the sentence with it, use "however." If it is in the middle, use "but."
There are lots of exceptions to that, but it is an easy way to think of it for someone learning the language.
Bill lost a lot of money in the stock market, but he still lives in a mansion.
Bill lost a lot of money in the stock market. However, he still lives in a mansion.

@maryo123 "But" is a conjunction, and "however" is a conjunctive adverb. Simply put, "but" would use a comma to split two sentences, while "however" would use a semicolon or full stop to split the same sentence.
