What's the context? I'm not sure I agree with the other answers with the article "a" in front of G, unless it's some new slang in the last 5-10 years.. It would still sound strange to me with the article if that's true.
1 g = $1000
a g = $1000
That's what I think of when I hear G in a countable way.
Edit: I'm tired, I thought of more definitions with G used in a countable way. He's a G, when used to talk about a person.
