I wasn’t feeling well, so i had to call in sick to work.
If I call in sick, then i won’t have to do the presentation.

@leeknows-dorito So I can also say “I should probably well call in sick to my company since I’m not feeling so well today.”?
- English (US)
@Keqing yes! just take out the well in front of call! so this: “I should probably call in sick to my company since I’m not feeling so well today”
- Traditional Chinese (Taiwan)
@leeknows-dorito Sorry I was meant to type “might as well”, but I guess there’s a slight difference with “should”, isn’t there?
- English (US)
@Keqing Yes just a slight difference! “I might as well call in sick to my company since i’m not feeling so well today” makes it sound more relaxed in a way! since using “should” makes it sounds like a responsibility!

@leeknows-dorito So “might as well” means something you can either do that or don’t?
- English (US)
@Keqing not exactly. “might as well” means given the situation, it’s reasonable and best to do something.
example:
if you are going to the kitchen and you have a dirty dish next to you, it would make sense to bring the dirty dish with you to put in the sink.
“since i am already going to the kitchen, i might as well bring this dirty dish to the sink”
so, with the example above
since you’re already sick, it would make sense to call into work!

@leeknows-dorito Wow, I just learned another expression, call into work. Does it have the same meaning as “call in sick”?
- English (US)
@Keqing yes! although this expression can be used for calling in for things other than being sick!
so, if your car broke down and you couldn’t get to work you could say “My car isn’t working, i need to call into work.”
The most simplified and most used version of this expression is just “call in”. It is already implied that you’re calling your job since this expression is used most commonly for this.
example:
“I don’t feel well, i’m going to call in.”
or
“My car broke down, i need to call in.”
- Traditional Chinese (Taiwan)
@leeknows-dorito I wonder if I can learn these common expression by reading young adult novels.
