‘a’ is used in front of consonant sounds. ‘an’ is used in front of vowel sounds.
examples:
I want a horse.
I want an apple.
I held a pillow.
It’s been an hour.
(although ‘h’ is a constant, it is silent in the word ‘hour’ so it starts with a vowel SOUND. making it ‘an’)
