aiding and abetting is a legal term use against a person that is an accessory to a crime. Or in the simplest explanation, helping another to commit a crime.
aid - means to help,
abet - to encourage
- English (US)
@eeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhh It's a legal phrase, used when someone did not commit a crime themselves, but helped someone else commit a crime somehow, or encouraged them to do it.
For example, telling a murderer where they can hide from the police would be aiding and abetting the murderer. Giving a gun to a person who says they will murder somebody, and then uses that gun to do so, is also aiding and abetting.
A person who aids and abets a criminal is often called an accessory. If they actually commit the crime with someone, instead of only assisting, they are called an accomplice.
