You can use “just” in three ways, but since “just” and “only” do share a similarity, I’ll explain those definitions in particular.
So here’s an example of how they’re interchangeable:
“You just have to read the title”
“You only have to read the title” = “solo tienes que leer el título”
In this case they both mean having to achieve something by doing an easy task.
Here’s how they differ:
Like I said before, “just” has multiple meanings. I explained the first one above but it can also mean: fair OR used as a way to command someone to do something. Example:
“That state has some very just laws” (fair) = “Ese estado tiene leyes muy justas”
“Just do your job!” (command)
In this case, you cannot replace the word with “only” because it wouldn’t make any sense.
The only time I can think of when “only” would be MORE common than using “just” would be when you have a limited amount of something.
“I only have 3 pieces left”
Here you COULD replace it with “just” but I hear this sentence more with “only”.
