Question about English (US)

What is the difference between I WAS GOING TO FLY TO NY NEXT MONTH.” and I am going to fly to NY next month and Why is this sentence wrong? I checked the key and it says that we should say “I am going “ instead but I would like to know if the first one can be used when saying that your plans were canceled ?Feel free to just provide example sentences.
