For some reason we typically use “on” for teams and “in” for clubs, but I’m not really sure why to be honest. It just sounds the best.

in this instance when you're in a group / club it you share an interest,a generalized thing that you and others like. when you're on a team you're working together on something. so he was in the Kendo club, he was working on a group project, he was on a team
