to “haul” something is to pull something along, usually something very heavy.
(also sometimes people say they made a “haul” usually when they talk about getting presents, then it means a lot of stuff.)

“haul” is not a word that is used a lot. You would be more likely to say “he was carrying something” or “he was dragging something”
