It means the wind is blowing quite hard against the sides of the climbers. “Howl” could also refer to the sound the wind makes when it blows hard.

When you say the wind is howling, it means the wind is so strong it’s making a loud noise. It reminds people of the howl of a wolf.
Saying the wind is howling is a normal phrase, but “sideways howl” is something this author made up. They mean that the wind is blowing directly against them, like a wall.

@gadgeteer they can move easier if the wind stays the same. Since they are pushing against the wind, if it were to stop blowing, they would lose their balance and fall over .
