While I think they're both technically correct, you're right in that the second one sounds way better.

@daliu_771 I'm actually not too sure, so please don't take me too seriously! But if I'm not wrong, saying "it is, more than ever, important to monitor our activities" (with the added commas) is a valid sentence, since you can use the phrase "more than ever" both altogether and pulled apart like in the example you wrote.
However, it's kind of an ugly sentence structure lol, it's better to say it as "more important than ever"
