Question about English (US)
*let me make it up to you, I'll pay for all of this.
*oh yeah I happened to see her at the mall yesterday but she was in a rush so we didn't talk enough.
*is they see this car in my garage I'd be thought that I was that one racing in those illegal races.
(does this sound natural?)

Instead, I’d say “I saw her at the mall yesterday but she was in a rush so we didn’t talk much”, “if they see that car in my garage they might think I was in one of those illegal races”

@heythereyall also why I saw her and not I happened to see her. you know that there's a slight difference right between those two
- English (US)
I happened to see her is perfectly fine it’s not wrong, but I think it’s a little less natural than I saw her
- Spanish (Spain)
@heythereyall I saw her is different than I happened to see her .. because I happened to see her is coincidence
- English (US)
@HDGD yes you could say I happened to see her
- Spanish (Spain)
@heythereyall so why u said that it was unnatural compared to I saw her?
- English (US)
@HDGD I just thought it was less colloquial You’ll hear more people saying I saw her than I happened to see her. That’s all
- Spanish (Spain)
@heythereyall yeah but that meaning of those two phrases aren't the same . and since I already know that ur confusing me. by saying that they are the same
- English (US)
@HDGD you’re right they aren’t the same phrase. Im so sorry for confusing you. Let me try to clear the air. In my opinion, I saw her sounds better but I happened to see her is not wrong. Your sentence was correct, but it sounded a little less colloquial to me. They are similar phrases, but they have different nuances. That’s all. Another way to imply that seeing her at the mall was coincidence, is to say “I ran into her at the mall” or I “bumped into her at the mall” which are also very colloquial and natural. Your original sentence wasn’t wrong, sorry for correcting you. Hope that helped a little! Have a good day! :)))
