Yep.... It seems that the speaker is trying to see the hardship as a kind of test given by god... something to endure for the sake of some higher purpose.

The "trial" is probably some challenge, difficulty, or problem.
"From the heavens" means that the trial was created by god or anyone from the spiritual world.
Let's think of a situation... hmmmmm...
A student from a wealthy family travels abroad to attend an elite college, but on arrival loses his or her passport and is mistaken for a criminal, spending a year in jail instead. The lessons of jail teach the student to better appreciate the suffering of others. The student's "trial" (challenging hardship) could be considered to be "from the heavens."
