The pit that runs parallel with a road for collecting water is a ditch.
Secondarily if I abandoned something, I ditched it. Example. "I ditched mountain biking in favor of playing hockey"
In the military when a pilot has to crash land on the ocean, they also ditch.
Example. "I don't have enough fuel to return to base, I'm going to have to ditch."

It probably more common as a casual way to say you didn't go to a place/event that you really didn't want to go. For example, "I ditched that class."
