Ellipsis (I was ____)

Without ellipsis, the sentence would be, “You were not there to see what had happened, but I was there to see what had happened.” Since we’re taking out the repeated part (there to see what had happened) and we’re not replacing it with anything else, it’s ellipsis.

Substitution would be if you changed the sentence from “You were at the event, but I wasn’t at the event” to “You were at the event, but I wasn’t there.” Since you would be replacing “the event” with the word “there,” it would be substitution.

For the sentence you gave, though, it’s just ellipsis.
