Retain is more of a negative word, where save is more positive.
“I retained money” is not ❌ usually used unless you are hiding it from someone.
“I saved money” is what you would usually used.
Examples:
“I saved a person from drowning.”
“I retained that information.”

@NoXeFly Yes you could use it like that but a more common way to say it is to ‘keep a hostage.’ ‘Retain a hostage,’ sounds formal and professional.

@NoXeFly The only slightly wrong part is you said ‘retain hostage’. When the subject is singular, use ‘a’:
‘Retain a hostage.’
And when the subject is more than one thing, use [word]s:
‘Retain [hostage]s.’
And also, ‘just last question’ is more commonly said as ‘one more question.’
