it is a metaphor, like saying they broke my heart, and it hurt so badly that it felt as if i had been stabbed with a very sharp knife.

@beckcka I see...could there be any other meaning....? Please see additional sentences.
Then I say it. “Denver, I know what that’s like. Listen. I killed my best friend.” It’s the first time I’ve spoken those words. They cut through me like a newly sharpened blade.
Denver is trying to fall from the cliff and the writer is trying to stop him...Given this, I thought the meaning is something like this: they stare at me with sharp[keen]-sighted eye given this is a very surprising story to hear. What would you think?

@gadgeteer I agree that the meaning could be the character is going through shock. When you’re cut by a newly sharpened blade, you barely feel it at first, you almost feel numb. It’s like you’re in shock.
I hope this helps!

@beckcka Oh I see...then I think I'm wrong...what is 'they' here? they are those words?
If so, like you said, below meaning in other expression would be more appropriate....right?
"Once I speak those words, I feel so badly like I been stabbed with a very sharp knife."

@beckcka Would you please take a look at my additional question when you have time:)?

@gadgeteer the “they” is referring to the words you spoke. saying them out loud shocked you, hence the metaphor. does that make sense?
- Korean
@beckcka Yes....below sentence which rephrased from my understanding in your teaching makes sense to you as well?
"Once I speak those words, I feel so badly like I been stabbed with a very sharp knife."

@beckcka would you pls check one more time :)?

@gadgeteer Your sentence sounds good, but a little unnatural. I would say “Once I say those words, I feel terrible, as if I’ve been stabbed with a newly sharpened knife.”
