Salsa means sauce in general. Some sauces are named for the ingredients or the preparation; salsa roja, salsa verde, salsa macha, etc.
This is an example of a good taco sauce:

I understand that in English, salsa (when talking about cuisine) refers to a sauce made mainly with tomatoes and peppers (which are considered to be Mexican food)
However, in Spanish, salsa is a general term.
Examples:
BBQ sauce= Salsa barbecue (you may see it spelled as "Barbiquiú" or "barbikiu", to keep with the pronounciation) or simply salsa bbq
Bechamel sauce= Salsa bechamel (more commonly called just Bechamel)
Hot sauce= salsa picante.

Salsa means sauce in general. English speakers are the ones to call it "sauce sauce" lmao.
