Question about English (US)

What is the difference between I didn’t think of having a birthday party, but now I’m glad I had one and I wasn’t thinking of having a birthday party, but now I’m glad I was having one ?Feel free to just provide example sentences.

I’m wondering why the first part should use didn’t think instead of wasn’t thinking, and why the second party should use had instead of using was having
