What does ”fashionable” mean?

In the material regarding environmental problems, I found the following expression
"The word ‘nexus’ in this context is fashionable. "
I understand taht the word "fashionable" does not mean "trendy" or "stylish", but don't know what exactly the word means.
Could you tell me the meaning of the word in this context?
For your reference, I cited the whole paragraph below.
"In short, the water, food and energy nexus means that the three sectors water, food and energy are inextricably linked, and that actions in one area more often than not have impacts in one or both of the others. The word ‘nexus’ in this context is fashionable. It has many meanings and uses but in the context of this article the concept of a ‘nexus’ implies optimisation. "

"Fashionable" means stylish or trendy, but I think that based on the paragraph, it was used to imply that something was turned into something ("....the concept of a 'nexus' implies optimisation")

Examples:
The leather was fashioned into boots.
The bottles were fashioned from green glass

similar to how you use "fabricate" or "construct" I guess?

Thank your for your reply.
I think your interpretation is right.
My English-Japanese dictionary explains that "fashionable" means "fabricated" or "can be transfomed".
However, it says that the usage becomes obsolete now.
Maybe, the author of the paper uses this word in a particular way.
