Question about English (US)

To me, there seem to be three stages when it comes to foreign language acquisition. To start with, you learn some basic stuff by studying the textbooks, and then you move on to pick up some expressions through conversation with native speakers. Ultimately, you immerse yourself in that language to the point where you start tricking your brain into believing that you grew up speaking that language even though it sounds a bit unrealistic. does it sound natural?
