They are similar.
“Are you looking for a particular item?” “Are you looking for a certain item?”
But when you say “I’m looking for a particular item” vs. “I’m looking for a certain item” the difference is that ‘particular’ item is you already know the item name, the size, etc. of the item, where as “certain” leaves a room for difference items that fulfills a certain need. At least that’s my impression, but they are very similar in this instance.
