I also think there is a mental barrier between koreans and foreigners. But only elderly. Now young people will welcome and like foreigners. I also want to make foreigners friends. I think comment guy met conservative, self-conscious people.

I agree with that there are some people in Korea who seem to use foreigners to learn languages. I think the problem is that clubs many foreigners join are usually aiming language exchange. Those who join the clubs unnecessarily have interest in the people of their target language.
I suggest that one should try joining other clubs where majority of the club members are Korean. They may not be interested in your language but they can be interested in you and make friends with you.
But I don’t think it’s the problem of foreigners, I want to blame for those who use foreigners for their own sake.
As a Korean university student, I also find it hard to make foreign friends. It’s sad to admit that our education systems, mind and culture are not yet widely opened to foreigners and giving good environment/opportunities for us to get along with others easily.

I know what the commenter means. As a serious language learner who has also tried various language exchange apps, I have a lot of similar ‘bitter’ experiences with some foreigners who’re learning/or pretending to learn Korean. Some of them ‘used’ me as if I’m their personal Korean tutor who’s available 24 hours a day (Eventually I had to block them as they started asking me to translate all kinds of their assignments way too frequently) and others thought of me as a kind of ‘easy gateway’ to Korea. Their questions were usually like how to get a Korean visa, how to get married to a Korean woman etc, you know what I mean? Also, I’ve seen a lot of fake native speakers - fake Americans, fake Brits, fake Koreans etc - on all language exchange apps that I’ve used, of course Hi Native included. Hence, I think there’re the same kind of people among Koreans, too.
My advice is, be always careful as not everyone in the world is nice and trustworthy enough lol. But you’ll still be able to find good friends along your journey of learning languages. Now, I have some really good international friends who I can truly rely on. ; )

@hansangu093 thank you for giving ur opinion! I'm still a teen so maybe in 5 or 10 years, when i visit Korea (or even live there), the mindset would have changed thanks to the young people :)

@Loveberry thank you for your opinion! But if there was a foreign student in your Korean university, would you try talking with them or starting a conversation (idk, if they're having a hard time making friends)?

@meriemelannabi I think I would if they were taking hard time. But I had chance to take 2 classes with some foreigners, for the first case when I had classes with 3 Chinese students, it seemed like they are always with their friend of same nationality. For my second experience, it was a Russian class and there were lots of foreigners from Indonesia, US, Tajikistan, Mongol, China (maybe that’s it) and Koreans were minorities. At that moment, I didn’t actually have courage to try talking with those people 😅

I was a foreign student in a Korean University. I usually had good/friendly interactions with my Korean peers. But ended up making the closest friendships with other foreign students.
It's tricky of course but the commenter is mentioning an issue I've heard talked about a lot by other foreigners here.
I think how one defines a 'close' or 'satisfying' friendship is really the kicker.
In my experience its been fairly easy to form casual friendships/friendly acquaintances with Korean people. But I've only managed to form deeper friendships with a handful of people.
I'm still not sure exactly why that is to be honest. Best of luck with your studies/friendships 파이팅!

@Soupandsalt hey, it's cool that u studied in a Korean university, but for how many years? I don't know if just one year can be sufficient to make close close friends.
And did u keep in touch with your Korean friends?
OMG sorry, I have tok many questions lol

@meriemelannabi I went to university here for 2.5 years (transfer student) but even my friends who did the full 4 years have similar experiences. I've lived in Korea for almost 7 years now and moved around domestically a couple of times for school and work.
There are some friends I keep in touch with, more I've fallen out of contact with.
It is a beautiful country, with a lot to love and learn.
