Would you please help me with the question below?
_ _ _ _ unfavorable reviews by theater critics appeared in several local magazines, the musical enjoyed high ticket sales since its opening.
The answer is “Although” but could someone kindly explain why “Despite” can’t be correct?
I think it’s also OK to say “Despite unfavorable reviews by theater critics (which) appeared in several local magazines...”.

@qqqiippp I’ve read the sentence more closely, and it’s the word “appeared” that makes “Although” the correct word.
If you wanted to use “despite” then you would say:
“Despite unfavorable reviews by theater critics appearing in several local magazines...”.
