Question about English (US)

I read somewhere that a word "cool" is a youngish term that older people should avoid using in their speech. I am a Japanese female in her 50s, and wondering if I should stop using it ...

Do I sound I am trying too hard to sound youngish when I use it and end up sounding uncool?? How about "awesome"? This sounds a bit youngish to me, too (but I use them both quite often).

If these words are not appropriate for my age, what words would be good alternatives? Wonderful? Fantastic? along that line?

Thank you for your kind and honest input in advance!
