What does So, he was your best friend growing up? mean?
What does So, he was your best friend growing up? mean?
Who is the subject of ‘growing up’? I was told that the full sentence should be’So, he was your best friend while you were growing up?’. Why can ‘while you were’ be crossed out? Tks!

Yeah, the full sentence you mentioned is grammatically correct. But for some reason, English speakers often do that when using the phrase “growing up”. I’m actually not sure why we do that. I thinks it’s because the “while” part is kind of implied. Here are some other examples with that phrase:
Growing up, my family always celebrated Christmas together.
What was life like for you growing up?
Jane was my best friend growing up.
Growing up in Chicago I got used to cold temperatures!

"Why can ‘while you were’ be crossed out?"
Because you will still be 100% understood without it. We remove a lot of things in english which aren't necessary to be understood.

@vz9002 How should I understand ‘going out to dinner’ grammatically in attached sentence? It will be great helpful if you give advice on how and when to use participle phrases correctly both in writing and speaking. Tks!

@Grace_Gao_2021 I wish I could help, but regular americans like me don't know what a participle phrase is, when we use it, and how we use it, we just speak english without knowing all that stuff.
