Question about English (US)

I’d like to ask you about how to use the expression:
“I’m not here to scare you.”

Could you please tell me if it’s natural that I use this expression in the following situation?

At night, I’m walking on a street, and I accidentally meet someone I don’t know. He is so surprised at me, because he thought no one is walking here except him.
“Aaaagh!”, he screamed.
And I said, “Sorry, I’m not here to scare you.”
