Concerning to the line highlighted, I can't understand why it is "Gerris had oblidged," not "Gerris oblidged." What is the difference?

At this point, Gerris has already said some words to honor the dead, which is why the author wrote it like 従っていた rather than 従った。
It is interesting that that part is the only spot written in past perfect. I guess it was just a whim on the author's part.
