Question about English (US)

A : So let's cut straight to the heart of the matter: you're a thief, and I can prove it.

B : Wh-What?

A : Unfortunately for you, at precisely the moment you were trying to sneak back with the key…

Your friend, the guardsman, was just waking from his little slumber.

B : B-but that's impossible! He was asleep, I'm positively...Ah!

A : keeping up on our friend’s somnolence, are we, old chum?

B : I-it was a slip of the tongue! ............

What did he really mean when he said "keeping up on our friend’s somnolence, are we, old chum?"

And also the identity of A is a scholar, I'm not sure if he used big words.
