Question about English (US)

I have a question about 'a' in expressions like 'a lot of', 'a few of', or 'a number of'. The examples mean numbers of 2 or more. What does come to mind when you see such 'a'?
I think, for instance, when you hear someone says ' I ate a... ', you will imagine something that is single. Then, when he/she says 'I ate a lot of apples.', you will imagine multiple apples. I'm curious about the transition of what you see in your mind.

Thanks in advance.
