Are Americans bad at geography? Or is it just a stereotype that has little to no truth upon it?

Just a stereotype...
I get why you asked that, a guy goes on Omegle and chats with an American, when he asks some geography related questions and the American doesn’t know the answers, people think that Americans aren’t good at geography...
Just because of several people who aren’t good at geography, people think that not even a single American is good at geography. It is not an appropriate attitude to generalize stuff like that, though.
Thank you for the question, hope my answer was helpful.
(as I said, it is perfectly normal to think the way you thought, I hope my answer was informative. Have a great day 😊)

Thanks for your answer. I've also heard that public American schools are free of charge. Are the costs justified with America's so-called poor education standards? More students are depicted to consume illegal substances and alcohol. I think big movies have significantly changed people's views on America's educational system. Especially with the current controversies surrounding America's minimum wage, many young Americans are portrayed as lazy and "dumb". What is your opinion on this matter?
- Country or region United States
@shadrach I heard this question a lot whether Americans on media are really dumb at easy questions and the answer is it truly depends on the person. I had some classmates who are Americans are great at geography and math and I had some who was not but good at other stuff like art and business. Schools taught you to be well rounded in all subjects but you seriously can't remember everything. So it really just a stereotype.

@shadrach 😅 Are we supposed to be good at geography as global citizens?
Tell me, are we supposed to be good at anything as humans? I certainly have no idea if my friends are good at geography. And how do you know they are good at geography?

@shadrach Sorry for my late answer, I was busy.
It is right that some students consume illegal substances and alcohol, however, when the school figures that out, they try to help that person with their addiction.
Also, yes, I do know that many young Americans are somehow deemed "dumb". Depends on the person really, as an illustration, there are many ivy league colleges, can you expect a dumb person to get into a college like that? No. The presence of these schools demonstrates that it is a wrong thing to label a country's citizens rather than labeling the person itself.

If I remember correctly, this question has been asked almost a million times on the US section lol and many American users have given pretty objective and honest answers to this question. ; ) Please find the questions and read the answers on the old posts. : )

More or less a stereotype depends on the person and the education they receive

Well it depends really cause I’ve not been taught about geography much in school, I learned on my own accord, but every district has its own curriculum, there are some districts that strictly teach you and some that don’t.

I would say most Americans are pretty bad at geography, but they’ll usually know the geography of their home state. Most people I know were barely (if at all) taught world geography at school. At my schools, we were taught some American geography, but world geography was only taught for the context of historical events/eras (such as Alexander the Great’s empire, the Mongol empire, etc.).
The amount of Americans who wouldn’t be able to find Indonesia on a map would probably astound you. I’m from the Chicago area, but went to college in SoCal and there were lots of people (who had lived here their whole lives) who had no idea where Chicago (the third largest city in the US!) was or even what state it was in. The education system is definitely lacking and it’s not common to find someone here who was given a comprehensive—let alone basic—geography education without taking elective classes.

@jennajuniper not everyone agrees with your statement. Perhaps the education standard from different states differs. I'd place myself on the middle of the spectrum in geography, but I've seen many smarter and dumber people in class. Maybe the media only focuses on a small part of society instead of looking America as a whole. Thanks for your answer.
