I'm no expert, but 空 is closer to what sky means. It is the semispherical view where you see stars, clouds, sun, etc.
天 is more like "above" and does kinda include 空. We say 天井 for ceiling and 天板 for top board, and 天国 for heaven. It doesn't have to be outside. It's more conceptual(?) way to say above.

Sora is sky like scientific thing but 天 is like heaven, religion thing or something like that.
天 is more fantastic word than 空, both means up
