"When you're watching sunset, how far do you think the sun actually is? Is it right above China, India or Africa?" asked the TV emcee. I thought China was about the right distance. But the right answer was Africa -- halfway around the world away. Amazing! Does this sound natural?

The sun is just above our head when it's noon in Japan. The sun sets around six or seven in the evening. So, the sun cannot travel that far within that time, which is only about a quater of a day.
Maybe that emcee made a mistake.

That may be, but think of it like this: If the day was split perfectly into quarters, then it makes sense. At noon the sun would be directly over your location, and at midnight, it would be on the other side of the world. So at 6 am and 6 pm, it would be a half way between you and the other side of the world (a quarter of the globe away, like over Africa). But the sun doesn't rise and set perfectly at 6 am and 6 pm. But, because the world is tilted on its axis, depending on the your position in the world (for you it is Japan) and the season it may have a longer or shorter time to travel before it sets.
