"If you [left/had left] yesterday, you wouldn't make it in time."

Are those two options correct??
If they are, what's the difference between them in meaning??

As for this kind of sentences, I have learned that only 'had left' is correct. but I run into numerous 'left's in real life. I'm so confused how to understand them.
