Question about English (US)

A) I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation.
B) There's a big bowling pin on top of the building. You can't miss it.
Can you tell me the reason "the" (definite article) is added to top in sentence A, conversely no article to top in sentence B? What's the difference between "on the top" and "on top"?
