@LTer You could definitely say that too! The reason is that, since the south is the lowest place on a map, we say “come down” because if you’re not in the south, you must be in the north (which is higher). Therefore, you must come down. And we just omit the “to the” portion of the sentence because that’s just the way it is. Does this make sense?

@LTer So what I would say is that, if you live in the south, saying “come down south” would be more natural. If you’re not in the south, you would say “go down south” (because “come” implies that the speaker is at the location). Saying “come to the south” is perfectly correct, just a little less spoken in the US.
