What does 1.I understand "I was trying to stump you" means "I was trying to tell you", because Google told me "stump", esp. in the US, is used for meaning "make a speech". Am I correct?

No, in this case "to stump" means to ask a question that the listener would have a difficult time answering. They would get stumped => i.e. they would sit there trying hard to think, but not coming up with any good answers.
"Front to back" is part of "to know front to back" = "to know very thoroughly, in great detail".
